Lockport was named for the Erie Canal locks still in evidence here.


Lockport was awarded $10 million in 2018 through the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative. The grant was used for nine projects, including restoration of the Palace Theatre and the historic post office, and mixed-use development.

The Grigg-Lewis Foundation, established in 1968 by the late Henrietta Grigg Lewis, is the prime local giver. The Sam and Gerry Ward Foundation, named for the late Lockport industrialist Sam Ward and his wife, also makes significant contributions.
